Information on the post;

The post will be maternity cover for an existing member of the section. The main duties of the post holder will be: To undertake a wide range of conveyancing transactions including commercial and industrial development; To prepare and complete a wide range of agreements on behalf of the Council; To provide legal advice and assistance on property, planning and highways matters to the Council’s Directorates.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Drafting, perusing, negotiating, amending and agreeing contracts, transfers, licences, deeds of grant and other agreements relating to the acquisition or disposal of interests in freehold land.

• Drafting, perusing, negotiating, amending and agreeing leases, agreements for lease licences relating to the acquisition or disposal of interests in leasehold land.

• Providing legal advice and assistance to the Property and Regeneration Division in respect of issues arising from the large property portfolio held by the Council.

• Drafting, perusing, negotiating, amending and agreeing agreements under the Town and Country Planning and Highways Acts

• Providing legal advice and assistance to all relevant departments of the Council, including local land charges and commons registration.

• The general drafting and execution of contract documents.

• Allocating work to the Legal Assistants and providing them with advice and support.

• Ensuring that the Legal Assistants are aware of new developments in the law relevant to their work.

• Dealing with all aspects of the legal work arising out of the compulsory purchase of land.

• Providing advice where required regarding procurement and state aid issues in relation to property and other contracts.

• To undertake such special projects as may be required and to undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may from time to time be required across the Division by the Head of Legal Services.

This is an outline description of the job as it presently exists. The job description will be examined periodically and updated to ensure that it relates to the job as then being performed, or to incorporate whatever changes are proposed by the Authority. Any such changes will be subject to consultation with the post holder. It will be the Authority’s aim to reach agreement to reasonable changes but, if agreement is not possible, the Authority reserves the right to insist on changes, following consultation.

The post requires the post holder hold qualification and enrolment as a Solicitor and full member of the Law Society with current Practising Certificate.
